Business Growth Through Focus and Diversification
October 20th, 2008
To successfully grow a business, it’s crucial that you understand the entire business sector and remain aware of the advantages and disadvantages of your unique business operation. Remaining focused on the unique product or service your company offers and carefully diversifying to meet your customers’ changing needs are two important components to consider when growing your business. Key business consultant and consultants are great to see in action.
When McDonald’s introduced their specialized line of McCafe espresso drinks to restaurants recently, the addition of custom coffee beverages served to reinforce McDonalds’ customers perception that McDonald’s restaurants always offer food and drink products that meet their need for convenience and cost-effectiveness. Business Consultants can help you make the right decisions.
Imagine, however, that McDonald’s had instead added a gourmet food section to their restaurants. Unless these specific McDonald’s locations are attracting an unusual customer base, their customers will most likely ignore the addition and the gourmet food market would never materialize because 1) area supermarkets and specialty grocery stores offer a better selection of gourmet foods in a more appropriate setting, and 2) McDonald’s customers do not generally view gourmet food as either convenient or cost-effective. Success in business today is all about remaining focused on what your customers want and expect.
Likewise, many companies in today’s market place have established that diversification is possible with little risk. Amazon.com is one great example of how effective diversification can work. Amazon started out strictly as a book retailer, but smoothly and effectively expanded into the sale of DVDs and CDs. Once their expansion into the DVD/CD market proved profitable, the company transformed from an online retailer to an e-commerce platform in which a number of large retailers, such as Toys R’ Us, sell their products using Amazon’s proven e-commerce platform. While diversifying may be a great avenue for growing your business, be careful that you aren’t attempting to be everything to every customer in the marketplace.
